Guide for Endnote PC users.

Cite While You Write

  1. Go to the EndNote toolbar or tab.
  2. Click "Insert Citation".
  3. Select "Find Citation".
  4. The "EndNote x8 Find and Insert My References" box will appear.
  5. Enter search terms in the box and click 'Find.'
  6. Click the reference in the search pane.
  7. Click Insert.
  8. Your in-text citation is inserted and the citation has been added to your Bibliography or Works Cited page.
  1. Select the EndNote x8 tab of the tool bar.
  2. Look for the "Style" box and select your style: MLA, APA, etc.
  3. If you don't see your style choose "Select Another Style," to open the "EndNote x7 Styles" box and find it.
  4. Click on the lower righthand 'arrow' in the 'Bibliography" box. This will open your "EndNote x7 Configure Bibliography" box.
  5. Select 'Layout'.
  6. Select your font.
  7. In the "Bibliography Title" box, type in a title. For APA, use 'References.' For MLA, use 'Works Cited.' Click 'OK.'
  8. Now click 'Instant Formatting and choose "'Configure Instant Formatting' to enable automatic updating as you add or delete references.

Always edit citations within EndNote NOT Word or citations will revert to EndNote settings

  1. Right click on the citation.
  2. Move your mouse to "Edit Citation(s)".
  3. Select "Exclude Author" or "Exclude Year," depending on the construction of your sentence.
  1. In the EndNote tab of the toolbar, go to "Insert Citation".
  2. Click 'Find Citation.'
  3. When the search box appears, find your reference.
  4. Click on the drop-down arrow next to the Insert button at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Select 'Insert & Exclude Author,' 'Insert & Exclude Year,' or 'Insert & Exclude Author & Year' as appropriate.
