Specialized 3Rs Databases
Databases that contain materials specifically relevant to the reduction, refinement, and replacement of animals in laboratory research and teaching will be of particular utility to your literature search. These databases have been created and are maintained by a variety of groups, including the U.S. government, universities in the U.S. and abroad, and private research institutes. You will find that these databases will cover a broader range of publication formats than commercial databases, including videotapes and software packages in addition to peer-reviewed articles.
- AWIC/NORECOPA 3Rs GuideNorecopa, in collaboration with the Animal Welfare Information Center has produced a database which provides an overview of guidelines, databases, journals, email lists, regulations and policies which may help researchers to implement the 3Rs when planning research that may involve animals. The database is called 3R Guide.
- ALTBIB: Bibliography of Alternatives to the Use of Live Vertebrates in Biomedical Research & TestingThe intent of this bibliography is to assist in identifying methods and procedures helpful in supporting the development, testing, application, and validation of alternatives to the use of vertebrates in biomedical research and toxicology testing. It is produced from MEDLINE database searches, performed and analyzed by subject experts from the Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program of the Specialized Information Services Division of the National Library of Medicine. - Alternatives in Education DatabaseThousands of entries of alternatives to the harming or killing of animals educational purposes from the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association Alternatives (HSVMA).
- ALTWEBThe Alternatives to Animal Testing Web Site was created to serve as a gateway to alternatives news, information, and resources on the Internet and beyond.
- Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC)AWIC is a part of the USDA's National Agricultural Library. Their site provides information on methods and sources available to reduce, refine, or replace animals used in teaching, testing, and research.
- Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT)The Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), founded in 1981, is part of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. CAAT promotes humane science by supporting alternatives to animals in research, product safety testing, and education through research in finding ways to replace animals with non-animal methods, reduce the numbers of animals necessary, or refine methods to make them less painful or stressful to the animals involved.
- Enrichment and Refinement DatabaseThis information resource is a merger of the two databases on refinement & enrichment for non-primate and primate animals kept in laboratories. It disseminates reference material on all aspects of refinement of housing and handling conditions and environmental enrichment for ALL animals kept in research, testing and teaching institutions.
- Institute for Laboratory Animal ResearchA list of books, reports, and guidelines on various aspects of laboratory animal welfare and use as well as links to repositories for laboratory animal models and strains.
- NICEATM and ICCVAM Test Method EvaluationsIncluded are fewer than ten alternative test methods that have been submitted to ICCVAM for review and evaluation. They contain information about the reviews of these tests, the respective categories of toxicity, and/or the ICCVAM Working Group assigned to the assays.
- NORINA: Norwegian Inventory of AlternativesNORINA (A Norwegian Inventory of Alternatives) provides information on over 3800 audiovisual aids and other alternatives such as computer programs to the use of animals or animal products in teaching, at all levels from junior [elementary] school to university.
