Embedding Streaming Media in Canvas

Tips for faculty on using streaming video LTIs in Canvas.

About Streaming Media LTIs in Canvas

A growing number of streaming media vendors offer LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) integrations in Canvas which allow seamless connections between Canvas and third-party learning tools and content. These integrations support:

  • Embedding a video player in your course
  • Seamless on- and off-campus access to a video from a Canvas course without additional logins by creating a proxied link.

The following streaming media LTIs have been enabled in Canvas:

  • Alexander Street
  • Library Video - Films On Demand
  • Library Video - JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool

We expect to update this list of streaming media vendors in the future as more of them offer Canvas integration tools.

Potential Issues

  1. LTI functionality differs by vendor and how you access an LTI in Canvas. See more under Methods of Access.
  2. Vendors may drop content from a database at any time, sometimes without notice, if they lose rights to a video.  To ensure uninterrupted access for your students, please reach out to the library libreserve@utsa.edu in advance to explore licensing options for the videos you plan to use in your course.

Streaming Media LTIs vs Library Reading List

The Library Reading List is a Canvas LTI tool to create a list of course materials including books, e-books, chapters, articles, streaming media, and more as well as request new items for your course. This list may be duplicated, reused from semester to semester and shared with other instructors and students. The main limitation of Library Reading List in regards to streaming media is that it does not support embedding a video player in Canvas, only a permalink.

Streaming Media LTIs are separate from the Library Reading List. You may embed a video player or add a permalink in your course modules to enhance course content, but these videos will not appear on the list of course readings created in the Library Reading List.
