USAID is an independent Federal agency established by 22 U.S.C. 6563. Its principal statutory authority is the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended (22 U.S.C. 2151 et seq.). USAID serves as the focal point within the Government for economic matters affecting U.S.
relations with developing countries. It administers international economic and humanitarian assistance programs. The Administrator is under the direct authority and foreign policy guidance of the Secretary of State.

The Development Experience Clearinghouse is the U.S. Agency for International Development online repository for materials documenting its nearly half century offering international humanitarian aid and economic, agricultural, trade, health, and democratic support.

Project Descriptions is a legacy collection of over 9,100 USAID and predecessor agencies projects from the 1950s through the mid-1990s. The projects collection is not a database of documents, but of project descriptions.

The records transferred to the National Archives from USAID comprise Record Group 286. USAID unified existing aid efforts from its predecessor agency, the International Cooperation Administration (RG 469), along with the work of the Development Loan Fund, some functions of the Export-Import Bank, and distribution activities of the Food for Peace Program.
