Research Data Management

Data Citation

Research data should be cited in much the same way as traditional scholarly works are cited.  This ensures proper attribution and credit as well as improving discoveribility and reproducibility.  While there are often discipline-specific requirements for citing published data, the same general information from any other citation should be present.

At a minimum the citation should include:

  • Author/Creator
    • Individual, group, or organization that created the dataset
  • Title
    • The name of the dataset
  • Year of Publication
    • When the data was published or posted online
  • Publisher
    • Entity responsible for producing or distributing dataset
  • Edition/Version
    • If there are multiple versions
  • Access Information
    • e.g. DOI or persistent identifier to locate the data
