Science fiction, as a distinct commercial and literary means of speculative story-telling, has a long pre-history, at least from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, 1818, to Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, 1889). Even so, Wells can be seen fairly as the initiator of what we now regard as a fresh genre, or—better still—fresh narrative mode.
