French Graphic Novels (Bande Dessinée)
In France and the French-speaking section of Belgium, graphic novels and comics have been a major literary and artistic format since the early to mid twentieth century. Unlike in the English-speaking world, where graphic novels have only recently gained some level of respectability, and still struggle to be considered as literature, in France and Belgium they are highly respected and considered the "ninth art" (with architecture, sculpture, painting, music, poetry, theater, cinema, and photography).

Classic French BD: Tintin
Launched in 1929 by Belgian storyteller Hergé, the Tintin comics follow the adventures of a young Belgian reporter who travels the world accompanied by his white fox terrier, Milou (Snowy in English translation). The Tintin comics exploded in popularity in the 1930s, propelling French-language bandes dessinées into international popularity. The Tintin books have since sold over 250 million copies, been translated into many languages, and have been portrayed in film. They have received some criticism for their frequently uncritical colonialist perspective, but remain a fundamental cornerstone of the French graphic novel and essential reading for anyone interested in the genre. The library has eight out of the 23 total volumes.

The Arab of the Future by Riad Sattouf
Call Number: NC1499.S337 A2 2015ISBN: 9781627793445Publication Date: 2015-10-20The Arab of the Future, the #1 French best-seller, tells the unforgettable story of Riad Sattouf's childhood, spent in the shadows of 3 dictators--Muammar Gaddafi, Hafez al-Assad, and his father. In striking, virtuoso graphic style that captures both the immediacy of childhood and the fervor of political idealism, Riad Sattouf recounts his nomadic childhood growing up in rural France, Gaddafi's Libya, and Assad's Syria--but always under the roof of his father, a Syrian Pan-Arabist who drags his family along in his pursuit of grandiose dreams for the Arab nation. Riad, delicate and wide-eyed, follows in the trail of his mismatched parents; his mother, a bookish French student, is as modest as his father is flamboyant. Venturing first to the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab State and then joining the family tribe in Homs, Syria, they hold fast to the vision of the paradise that always lies just around the corner. And hold they do, though food is scarce, children kill dogs for sport, and with locks banned, the Sattoufs come home one day to discover another family occupying their apartment. The ultimate outsider, Riad, with his flowing blond hair, is called the ultimate insult... Jewish. And in no time at all, his father has come up with yet another grand plan, moving from building a new people to building his own great palace. Brimming with life and dark humor, The Arab of the Future reveals the truth and texture of one eccentric family in an absurd Middle East, and also introduces a master cartoonist in a work destined to stand alongside Maus and Persepolis. -

The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi; Anjali Singh (Translator)
Call Number: PN6747.S245 P4713 2007ISBN: 9780375714832Publication Date: 2007-10-30Here, in one volume: Marjane Satrapi's best-selling, internationally acclaimed graphic memoir of growing up as a girl in Iran during the revolution has for twenty years been a classroom staple, a feminist manifesto, and one of the most popular and widely known graphic novels of all time. "A stunning graphic memoir...a wholly original achievement in the form." --The New York Times Persepolis is the story of Satrapi's unforgettable childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming--both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up. Edgy, searingly observant, and candid, often heartbreaking but threaded throughout with raw humor and hard-earned wisdom--Persepolis is a stunning work from one of the most highly regarded, singularly talented graphic artists at work today. -

Aya by Marguerite Abouet; Clément Oubrerie (Illustrator); Helge Dascher (Translator); Clément Oubrerie (Illustrator)
Call Number: PN6790.C853 A9213 2008ISBN: 9781894937900Publication Date: 2007-02-20"That's what I wanted to show in Aya: an Africa without the . . . war and famine, an Africa that endures despite everything because, as we say back home, life goes on." --Marguerite Abouet Ivory Coast, 1978. Family and friends gather at Aya's house every evening to watch the country's first television ad campaign promoting the fortifying effects of Solibra, "the strong man's beer." It's a golden time, and the nation, too--an oasis of affluence and stability in West Africa--seems fueled by something wondrous. Who's to know that the Ivorian miracle is nearing its end? In the sun-warmed streets of working-class Yopougon, aka Yop City, holidays are around the corner, the open-air bars and discos are starting to fill up, and trouble of a different kind is about to raise eyebrows. At night, an empty table in the market square under the stars is all the privacy young lovers can hope for, and what happens there is soon everybody's business. Aya tells the story of its nineteen-year-old heroine, the studious and clear-sighted Aya, her easygoing friends Adjoua and Bintou, and their meddling relatives and neighbors. It's a breezy and wryly funny account of the desire for joy and freedom, and of the simple pleasures and private troubles of everyday life in Yop City. An unpretentious and gently humorous story of an Africa we rarely see-spirited, hopeful, and resilient--Aya won the 2006 award for Best First Album at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Clément Oubrerie's warm colors and energetic, playful lines connect expressively with Marguerite Abouet's vibrant writing. -
