Open Access at UTSA

What authors need to know about Open Access Publishing and UTSA Libraries support for OA

Open Access Book Publishing

Sometimes referred to as open access monographs, OA books are less common than open access journals, due to the costs involved with publishing a book. However, there are some dedicated open access book publishers as well as some commercial publishers that will allow self-archiving of book chapters in open access repositories.

Open access books follow the same general principles as open access journal publishing. Books are made freely available online at no cost to the reader, and often involve a book processing charge (BPC) or publication fee paid by the author.

Many open access book publishers are supported by memberships from academic institutions. UTSA supports several OA monograph initiatives, such as the MIT Direct to Open Program or University of Michigan's Fund to Mission Program.
