Historical Maps & Atlases

A guide to key databases and web resources for historical maps, with a sample of historical atlases available in print.

Try an Historical Atlas

Atlases are an oft forgot source for information you might not find easily elsewhere. An atlas may include maps, illustrations, photographs, graphs, charts, and boxed features. Atlases are available in print or online versions.

An historical atlas is different from a geographical atlas. While the focus of a geographical atlas is on the maps, providing a singular ‘snapshot’ of a region at one particular moment in time, an historical atlas integrates maps with an informative narrative that summarizes important data, trends, or statistics about the historical time period.
