Industry Analysis within Capital IQ

Within Capital IQ (CIQ), there are two ways to get info/data for industry analysis: one starting from “Markets” tab, the other starting S&P Industry level.  Let’s dive deep into each of these two:

  • The first approach to industry analysis is to simply select and click the “Markets” tab after you get into CIQ, then you will see the page “Market Analysis - Industry Analysis.
  • There will be a few tables on this page: the 1st table lists “Top / Worst Performing Industries – YTD” and
  • the  3rd table is the “Sector Performance” with figures on:  Market Cap, LTM Total Rev, LTM EBITDA, Transactions (Last 3 Months) , etc.
  • That table includes 11  sectors as below:
    1. Energy
    2. Real Estate      
    3. Materials         
    4. Industrials       
    5. Consumer Discretionary            
    6. Consumer Staples        
    7. Health Care     
    8. Financials         
    9. Information Technology            
    10. Communication Services           
    11. Utilities
  • Then from there you can further select and click any of the above sectors, in order to get more specific, distinct  data for the selected sector. 
  • For instance, if you click the sector “Consumer Staples,” you may notice the option on the left bar would be changed with the following options for your further exploration, that enables users to get more detailed, deeper info/data:
    • ​​​​​Industry Profile
      • Constituents
      • Key Professionals
      • Key Stats & Ratios
      • Financial Operating Metrics
      • CIQ Estimates
      • Active Investors  
    • ​​​​​Transactions
    • News, Events & Filings
    • Relationship Management

 

  • The second approach to industry analysis within CIQ is through searching S&P 500 (^SPX).  Once you get into the page for S&P 500 (^SPX) (click this link S&P 500 if you already in CIQ databases),  you will see from the bottom the 2nd last table with heading "Market Surprise" that lists the precise number of constituent companies under each of sectors within S&P 500.
  •  And the last table on the same page is  "Constituent Summary" listing  distinct figures for P/E(LTM), P/E(NTM) ,Dividend Yield and Annual EPS of each sectors.
  • Users can further click each of the 11 sectors listed on the table Constituent Summary in order to get more detailed data specific to this sector.

 

  • Comparison of two approaches to Industry Analysis within Capital IQS&P 500 (^SPX) comes in varying levels of coverage for industries:  While industries covered under “Markets” tab is worldwide, through S&P 500 approach, users only get into aggregated data from 500 constituents of S&P index.  So obviously, the number of companies under each of these 11 sectors/industries in S&P 500 (^SPXare much smaller.  Below is the precise number of companies for each of sectors you will get with S&P 500 approach to industry analysis within CIQ:
