Achebe's Things Fall Apart is set in Africa, in the 1880s, within the Ibo society of Umuofia (what is now Nigeria) right before and during the arrival of the British Empire. The novel's plot is made up of the tragic movements of its complex protagonist - the traditional and uncompromising Ibo clansman, Okonkwo.
