Dealing with Language
Only some of the content on the Russian government websites is duplicated in English. In some cases, selected Russian-to-English content is translated or summarized ; in others, English content may be specifically developed to address scenarios encountered by non-Russian Federation residents in using Russian government sites.
There are several tools and approaches that may be helpful for researchers with limited or no Russian-language skills:
- Chrome browserGo to Settings -> Languages -> Offer to Translate. Doing searches of Russian sites in Chrome triggers a prompt to Translate.
- Google TranslateBuilt-in input via Cyrillic keyboard, voice, and handwriting. Supports uploading and translation of documents including searchable PDFs. Limitations on large file size. Mobile apps.
- Yandex.comThe leading Russian search engine in English. Includes built-in Translate function and in-box Cyrillic keyboard. Mobile apps.
- Reverso TranslationFree multi-language translation service. Offers built-in Cyrillic keyboard. Examples of search term usage in context in both languages. Translate documents up to 8,000 words. Mobile apps. $ options.
