EndNote for Mac

This guide details the steps for using EndNote on a Mac. It covers Cite While You Write in Pages and Word for Mac.

About EndNote Web

EndNote web makes it so you can add references to your collection without having to carry around a writable and removable drive.  Very convenient!

Once your account has been established,  you may sign onto your EndNote web account in the following ways:

1. Go to www.myendnoteweb.com and use your email address and password

OR

2. Access Web of Science from the library's homepage and click "Sign In" at the top of the screen

OR

3. Open your local EndNote library and go into "Online Mode" by clicking the earth icon on the top left side of the toolbar.

Creating an EndNote Web Account

1. Go to www.myendnoteweb.com and follow the instructions to sign up for an account.

OR

1. Access the Web of Science database through the library homepage.

2. Click on the link that says "My EndNote Web" at the top of the page.

3. Look for the "Register" link on the left-hand side of the page and select it.

4. Fill in your email address in both writable boxes and press Continue.

5. Follow the instructions from there.

OR

1.Open your existing EndNote Library.

2. Go to "Edit" in the toolbar menu and select "Preferences" from the drop-down list.

3. The "EndNote Preferences" box will appear.  On the left-hand side of the box, choose the "EndNote Web" link.

4. Next, select the "Register Online" button that will appear in the top right-hand side of the box.

5. Fill in your email address and click the "Submit" button.

6. Follow the instructions from there.

Transferring References Between Web and Local

PLEASE READ: It is possible to transfer references from EndNote Web to your desktop or local EndNote library and vice versa.  However, you must push References to the Web or pull them from the Web in your local EndNote library. You cannot sync from your Web account.

1. Transferring to EndNote Web from local:

  • Look in the Groups Pane
  • Find the category "EndNote Web"
  • Click on the word "transfer"
  • The "EndNote Web Transfer References" box will pop up
  • Select "Transfer References from Desktop to Web"
  • Determine whether you would like to transfer the showing references, all references in your library, or all references in a particular group and mark the appropriate selection
  • Click the Transfer button
  • A box will appear affirming the successful transfer
  • Your transferred references will now appear as a Group under "EndNote Web" in the Groups Pane

2. Transferring from EndNote Web to local:

  • Look in the Groups Pane
  • Find the category "EndNote Web"
  • Click on the word "transfer"
  • The "EndNote Web Transfer References" box will pop up
  • Select "Transfer Reference from Web to Desktop"
  • Decide whether you would like to allow duplicate references and select or de-select the "Allow Duplicates" box accordingly
  • Click the Transfer button
  • A box will appear affirming the successful transfer
  • Your references will populate in the "My References" tab

WARNING: File attachments and inserted figures WILL NOT transfer from local to web.

Installing Plug-Ins

EndNote offers two plug-ins, which you may install.

1. The Cite While You Write Plug-in: allows users to insert references, and format citations and bibliographies automatically when composing papers in Word.

2. The Firefox Extension: allows users to save online references directly to their EndNote Web libraries.

Sharing a Library

After logging into your EndNote Web account, follow these steps:

  1. Select the "Organize" tab.
  2. Click on the "Manage My Groups" sub tab.
  3. Your groups will appear by name.
  4. Identify the group that you wish to share, then click the "Manage Sharing" button.
  5. Click on the link that says "Start Sharing This Group".
  6. A new window will appear.  In this window, you may upload a text document containing a list of email addresses or manually enter the email addresses of those with whom you would like to share the selected group.
  7. Determine whether you would like others to just view or view and add to the group and mark the appropriate selection.
  8. Click apply.
  9. Others may now view or view and add to your group.

Limitations

EndNote web does not allow a user to view files and attachments. Any PDFs or inserted figures will remain only in your desktop library.
